The CSIA Ombuds Office (CSIA Ombuds) recently presented its Annual Report covering the period from January 1st to December 31, 2024 to the Board of Directors.
In our report, we commended CSIA for taking significant steps to simplify key policies, streamline and strengthen internal complaints processes, both formal and informal (see the Code of Conduct and Resolution Process), and support the development of an independent ombuds service.
In 2024, our office engaged in discussions with 12 individuals (referred to as visitors) and held multiple conversations with CSIA staff about individual concerns raised with CSIA. All conversations with the Ombuds are confidential, unless we obtain permission from the visitor to escalate issues (or we have a legal obligation to disclose information or need to do so due to safety concerns).
All the issues raised with our office fell under CSIA policies, and from these issues, we observed a significant theme of inappropriate behaviours among members, including abuse, harassment, bullying, and inappropriate behaviours (sexual). Secondary themes included CSIA members working “under the table”, as well as concerns about evaluations during courses and about obtaining designations.
Based on our observations, we have made four recommendations to CSIA, focusing on increasing awareness of the Code, clarifying processes, emphasizing the expectations set out in the Code, and developing internal capacity for the effective resolution of concerns by CSIA. We encourage you to review our recommendations and CSIA’s responses. We will continue to collaborate with CSIA to implement the recommendations in the coming months.
We thank CSIA members for trusting our office and invite anyone with a concern to contact us. We also welcome feedback about our report and the ombuds service. Please contact us!
